How to join our club

PLAYER ELIGIBILITY

To play for the Marist Canberra Football Club (Marist Football)) boys must be a current student at Marist College Canberra. Full details can be found in the Marist College Canberra Sports Policy.

PREMIER LEAGUE EXEMPTION

Marist Football participates in Capital Football’s MiniRoos and Junior League community football competitions.

Whilst the College strongly encourages boys to play football for the school, it is recognised that a small number of boys (Years 7-12) may instead elect to join an Under 13 SAP team, a National Premier League (NPL) or Capital Premier League (CPL) team. -These students must complete and submit a NPL and CPL Exemption Policy and Form every February. It should be noted the ability to play for an NPL or CPL team does have a number of conditions as outlined on the form.

AGE GROUPS

At Marist Football boys play in teams with their classmates and school year group:

  • Year 4 – Under 10 (MiniRoos)
  • Year 5 – Under 11 (MiniRoos)
  • Year 6 – Under 12
  • Year 7 – Under 13
  • Year 8 – Under 14
  • Year 9 – Under 15
  • Year 10 – Under 16
  • Years 11 and 12 – Under 18

The only exception to these age groups is if Marist Football requires a boy (or boys) to play in a different age group in order to form viable teams. Any such movement will be made in consultation with the College.

GRADING SESSIONS AND TEAM SELECTION

To assess each player’s skills and place them into teams of boys with similar ability and potential, grading sessions are held annually, over two weekends in late February. Full details of the 2024 grading sessions can be found here.

Whist Marist Football encourages all boys to attending grading, a player may elect to not grade and instead will be placed in the lowest division team within their age group.

Once grading has been completed, team lists will be published via email and on this website. A player will not be placed into a team until they are registered in Play Football.

For more information regarding grading and the team selection process, including selection for Division 1 and the First XI please refer to our Grading Policy.

VOLUNTEER COACHES AND MANAGERS

Each team requires at least two parents (or family members) to volunteer to be the coach and manager. You do not need to be a football expert to do this as support and training is provided. See our Volunteers section for further details.

Unfortunately, we are unable to enter a team in the competition until a coach and manager has been confirmed.

TRAINING

Attendance at training is compulsory. Training is held once per week for lower division teams, and twice per week for higher division teams. Training may be straight after school at the College or Melrose Synthetic, or later under lights at Phillip Oval (usually older players).

For more information on team training refer to our Training page.

SATURDAY MATCHES

All matches are played on Saturday at times set by Capital Football. Refer to the Match times page for times by age group.

Saturday matches will commence in April and go for 16 rounds.
