Marist Canberra
Football Club

Grading Process

Prior to each season Marist Football undertakes a grading process to assess the skills of each player. This allows the club to form teams of boys who have a similar level of ability and potential.

Our grading process is designed to ensure that all players have the best opportunity to fully participate, develop and enjoy football.

All players must be registered in PlayFootball prior to attending grading.

* Under 18 – there will also be mid-week grading sessions as advised by the coach of the First XI.

Important information

  • All grading sessions are held at Marist College Canberra.
  • Please arrive 20 minutes early in order to check in at the registration desk.
  • All players must wear football boots, long socks and shin pads. There is no requirement to wear your Marist PE uniform.

Frequently asked questions

Is grading compulsory?

No. Whilst we encourage all players to attend the grading sessions, it is not compulsory. Players who do not want to grade will be placed in the lowest division team within their age group.

What if a player can’t attend a grading session at the allocated time?

Please email our Registrar in advance (registrar@maristfootball.com.au). Where possible we will arrange for you to attend a replacement grading session e.g. nearest age group.

What if a player is sick or injured and unable to attend grading?

Please email our Registrar in advance (registrar@maristfootball.com.au). The player will then be allocated to a team based on prior experience and feedback from their former coach.

Does a player need to attend all grading sessions for his age group?

We encourage players to attend all grading sessions for their age group i.e. attend both weekends. This gives the player the best opportunity to display their skills and ability.

To be considered for a division 1 or 2 team a player must attend all scheduled grading sessions. The only exception is if a player is injured, sick or representing Marist College at a summer sports commitment.

Can a boy play up an age group?

No. As Marist Football enters competitive teams in all age groups, a player is required to grade and play within his allocated year/age group.

Can I make a special request for a particular team placement?

No. This includes a request to be placed in a team with friends a particular coach. However, if there are any significant pastoral care issues around a team placement, please make a request to our President (president@maristfootball.com.au) for consideration on a case-by-case basis.

Do Marist students who are playing Under 13 SAP, NPL or CPL have to  attend Marist Football grading?

No. There is no requirement for your son to attend our grading. If your son does happen to join Marist Football after our grading process has finished, we will determine his team placement on a case-by-case basis. He is not guaranteed a placement in a division 1 or 2 team.

How can I find out more information about the grading process?

Refer to the Marist Football grading policy.
