Season 2023 grading

At the beginning of each season, the Marist Canberra Football Club (MCFC) undertakes a grading process to assess the skills of each boy, and form teams who have a similar level of ability and potential. This gives our players the best opportunity to fully participate, develop and enjoy football.

All players must be registered in PlayFootball in order to attend grading. Further information on our registration process can be found on our How to join our club page. All players must be registered by the 16 February 2023.

Grading for 2023 will be held on the MARIST COLLEGE OVALS as follows:

Players should attend all sessions within their age groups.

Is grading compulsory?

Whilst we encourage all players to attend the grading sessions, it is not compulsory. Players who chose not to participate will be placed in the lowest division team within their age group.

What if we can’t attend a grading session at the allocated time?

Please email us in advance at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Where possible we will arrange for you to attend a replacement grading session e.g. nearest age group.

Does my son need to attend all grading sessions for his age group?

We encourage boys to attend all grading sessions for their age group (i.e. attend on both weekends). This gives the player the best opportunity to display their skills and ability.

To be considered for a:

  • Division 1 team – a player must attend a minimum of two grading sessions.
  • Division 2 team – a player is strongly encouraged to attend a minimum of two sessions. It is highly unlikely that a player will be placed in a division 2 team if they have attended only one grading session.

The only exception is if a player is injured or sick. Additional requirements also exist for inclusion in the Under 18 First XI team.

Can my son play up an age group?

No. As Marist Football enters competitive teams in all age groups, a player is required to grade and play within his allocated year/age group.

Can I make a special request for a particular team placement?

Unfortunately, no. This includes a request to be placed in a team with a particular friend/s or coach. However, if there are any significant pastoral care issues around a team placement, a request to the Master in Charge of Football will be considered on a case by case basis.

My son is playing in the NPL or CPL competition, does he need to attend Marist Football grading?

No, there is no need for your son to attend our grading. If your son does happen to join Marist Football after our grading process has finished, we will determine his team placement on a case by case basis. He is not guaranteed a placement in a division 1 or 2 team.

How can I find out more information about the grading process?

Please refer to the MCFC Grading Policy .
